Reflections on Crying In H Mart
Hello fellow book clubbers,
We are officially four weeks away from our first book club meeting of the year. Yay! How are we liking Crying In H Mart so far? Right from the first chapter, I knew I’d be in for a ride.
Zauner eloquently writes about Korean food and also describes the complexity of appreciation for her mother and her culture as a whole.
“Food was how my mother expressed her love. No matter how critical or cruel she could seem—constantly pushing me to meet her intractable expectations—I could always feel her affection radiating from the lunches she packed and the meals she prepared for me just the way I liked them.”
As a Filipino, I draw a lot of connections between food, culture, and my family relationships. This book has prompted me to reflect on these connections; how my mother expresses love through the food she makes and how to recall aspects of Pinoy culture that I enjoyed growing up.
There are many ways that a person can express love to another. What are some ways you express love to the people in your life? How are these ways shaped by your culture and community?
Let me know in the comments or come join the discussion over on our Instagram.
Our in person meeting will take place at on Wednesday, February 28th at 6 pm at 353 Church Street. Looking forward to meeting you!
Happy reading,
Stacey
